My Humongous Bomber is the ultimate anti-urban machine.
One of the major drawbacks of the B-52 is that it carries it's entire (heavy) bomb-load in the long skinny fuselage, with the long skinny wings having to support all that weight. The high weight of the fuselage and high lift of the wings causes the wings of a B-52 to want to bend right off of the airplane! In turbulence, the wings and fuselage of a B-52 are flexing all over the place... so much that pilots have referred to flying the B-52 in turbulence at low-level as "flying a lot of parts in tight formation". In fact, when cracks appear in the wings of a B-52 (this happens to all of them), the Air Force just adds another layer of aluminum to the bottom of the wing to try and keep them from flexing right off the plane!
A better way to carry tonnage is to DISTRIBUTE THE WEIGHT OF THE BOMB-LOAD EVENLY ACROSS THE WING... this lends itself to a FLYING-WING DESIGN. The wing itself produces all the lift (of course) and the fuel and bombs can be spread out evenly across the entire body... the airplane can then be designed with very minimum structure because weight is spread out so evenly across the plane, just like the lift is. Also, the lack of a fuselage and horizontal stabilizer increase efficiency.
For a LARGE flying wing, jet engines can be mounted on the BACK of the wing, sucking air out of the boundary layer (this is air that has been slowed down by friction) thus allowing higher efficiency from the engines.
In summary, carrying a huge payload efficiently lends itself to a flying wing configuration... Boeing has concepts for huge civil transports that look a lot like the Humongous Bomber for this reason.
The Humongous Bomber is not particularly fast (it cruises at about mach 0.75) or stealthy (it has big tipsails and huge exposed engines), but it carries a whopping huge payload (the bomb load alone of the Humongous Bomber is equal to the TOTAL weight of a moderately loaded 747). In short, if you have to deliver the better part of a million pounds of ordnance to a target slowly but efficiently with everybody seeing you, the Humongous Bomber is the plane of choice.
The Humongous Bomber weighs in empty at 500,000 lb (20% more than a 747) and has a gross weight of 1.2 million pounds (50% more than a 747). This allows 600,000 of bombs to be carried in the wing's huge internal volume... this is more than enough to level the home, city, and a good part of the state of anybody that you do not personally like.
